In vaccine technology, especially, scientists in academia and biotech firms have mobilized epitope discovery based on the use of high-throughput antibody screening for rational vaccine design.

The 2008 Congress will highlight the most important current hardware and software advances in all areas of cytometry, including measurements of properties of whole cells (whether in flow or on a substrate) and analysis of subcellular patterns (whether for adherent cells or cells in suspension). A major emphasis will be placed on the critical role cytometry is playing in the growing field of systems biology, which seeks a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of biological processes at all levels.

A highlight of the Congresses is the impressive set of exhibitions by both new and established companies. Attendees can learn first-hand about the most recent instruments and software. The atmosphere at the meeting is very conducive to discussions among participants and facilitates cross-fertilization between flow and imaging approaches to cell analysis. The Congress also presents a number of formal educational opportunities, including short courses, tutorials and workshops.

Purpose. This FOA invites applications focused on research education for the development and testing of new statistical models to address genetics-based research problems in addiction. Applicants are expected to propose a well-integrated research education and training program in statistical models or computational methods in genetics for undergraduate, graduate, and/or postdoctoral level students. Since this is a novel program, participants may be supported for as long as five years, however shorter durations of funding of some individual participants are encouraged. Achieving the capacity of the institution to address the identified research area(s) is an additional goal of this award. During this award, institutions will be expected to implement strategies for enhancing research infrastructure and capacity building at their institution and in collaborative activities.

Genomics, the study of complete genomes, has revolutionized genetic research. Complete and annotated genome sequences and comprehensive maps of polymorphism are available for many model organisms, including the genomes of man and our closest relative, the chimpanzee. Genome architectures and structure-function relationships of complex macromolecular assemblies are being elucidated in ever greater depth. Genome-wide transcriptome and proteome analyses are widely available. Powerful technologies are at hand to generate both heritable and transient genetic perturbations. Importantly, comparative genomics provides deep insights into evolutionary mechanisms underlying genetic variation, adaptation and speciation. Genomic polymorphisms among humans reveal a rich picture of our recent evolutionary history as well as the genetic, epigenetic and environmental contributions to disease risk.
